Elementary Orchestra
Instrumental music is offered to students in grades 4-8 in District 65. Mr. Janossy teaches Orchestra at Haven Middle School, and Kingsley, Willard, and Orrington Elementary Schools. Ms. Rachel Johnson teaches Orchestra at Lincolnwood School. All four elementary school are Haven "feeder schools."
Orchestra lessons are taught weekly at each elementary school. Orchestra instruments include violin, viola, cello, and bass. Lessons are normally grouped according to instrument and level of experience. There are opportunities for students in 4th and 5th grade with previous experience to participate in advanced ensembles.
One of the goals for students in 4th and 5th Grade Orchestra is to continue studying their instrument in Middle School. Members of our Orchestra Programs are part of a continuing tradition of excellence that extends back to the school's founding in 1927! There is a banner in the Orchestra archives that shows the Haven Orchestra won a contest back in the 1920's! Many historic articles in the Evanston Review, Haven Scroll, and school yearbooks show pictures of instrumental music concerts and events. Haven Orchestra students have the opportunity to continue their musical experience in the award-winning Arts Department at Evanston Township High School.
Mr. Janossy has been the Orchestra Teacher since 2001. He has a Master's Degree in Music Education from Northwestern University and a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has completed a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from University of Illinois at Chicago and the Instructional Leadership Certificate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His major instrument are the double bass, piano, and organ. He also plays violin, viola, and cello. When Mr. Janossy is not making music, he likes to spend time with family and friends, travel to other countries, and spend time in the great outdoors. Mr. Janossy is proud of his nephew who is in 6th grade in District 65 and plays the violin.
